Bjørn Nørgaard

On show from the 4th of June 2021 to 30th of January 2022

Horsens Art Museum presents a special exhibition with Bjørn Nørgaard. The exhibition consists of several significant installations by the artist, such as Zodiacs from 2017 and Materia et Spiritus, Materia et Corpus, Materia et Frictio, Materia et Actio, Materia et Syntaksis, from 2020. The two works are presented for the first time together with the exhibition at Horsens Kunstmuseum.

Zodiacs from 2017, which consists of 12 Chinese animal signs from the Chinese astrological system: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. In China, there are a number of philosophical schools, where especially Confucius and Laozi (Dao) are important. Over time, they are “sanctified” in various ways and roughly in our sense, Confucianism is an official, administrative and state-minded religion, “rational”, where Daoism is popular, diverse, unmanageable with many religious traditions in trade. The 12 zodiac signs are said to be of Buddhist origin.

Materia et Spiritus, Materia et Corpus, Materia et Frictio, Materia et Actio, Materia et Syntaksis, from 2020 Bjørn Nørgaard’s work with actions sheds light. Back in the 1960s, action serves as a method to get around the concept of work and the classical art genres in favor of an open and uncharted space for action. The action becomes the starting point for interactions between body and materials in the form of demonstrations.
