A solo exhibition by Nina Nowak (b.1984) which will open October 17 th 2026 at Horsens Art Museum.

THEMES AND BACKGROUND

What happens when what we normally observe from a distance suddenly enters the space we inhabit?

In deep down bedrock mind, Nina Nowak explores the boundary between the staged space and the external forces that shape our world. The exhibition takes its point of departure in the museum’s white, institutional space, but does not remain confined by it. Instead, Nina Nowak investigates what happens when the illusion of a safe and separate space for observation dissolves, and nature, technology and infrastructure become active participants.

Through a large-scale installation, drawings and sculptures, the exhibition explores how we perceive and organise the world around us. What do we see, and what do we overlook? How do our cultural ideas shape the way we understand nature, space and materiality? And what happens when the structures we have created begin to change?

The exhibition extends through the museum’s ground floor and up to the first floor. Here, visitors encounter moving shadows, mechanical constructions, landscapes and objects that challenge the notion of the static artwork. Water, movement and pressure are recurring elements, pointing towards a world in constant transformation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Nina Nowak’s artistic practice is rooted in a bodily and material-based investigation of the relationship between humans, technology, nature and infrastructure. Her works explore themes of transformation, loss of control and the interplay between the organic and the mechanical.

Nina Nowak often works with water, movement and pressure to activate materials and create works that slowly change their form and character over time. Her installations and objects investigate how materials can behave unpredictably, and how our surroundings are both shaped by us and shape us in return.

In deep down bedrock mind, Nowak continues this investigation with a focus on perception, space and the structures that lie beneath our immediate field of vision. The exhibition invites visitors to experience the world from different perspectives and to consider how our ideas about nature, technology and human control can be challenged.
