Wave medium by Martha Skou
BACKGROUND AND THEME
Wave Medium (working title) stems from a time marked by digitalization, climate change and an increasing separation from nature. Martha Skou investigates how energy, movement and materiality affect our perception and bodily experience of the world. Through sculpture, textile, ceramics and sound, the works make visible otherwise invisible phenomena such as waves, tides, electrical signals and physical forces that constantly affect us and our surroundings.
By working with wave phenomena such as interference, refraction and reflection, Martha Skou materialises energies that we normally do not register directly. This perspective creates new insights into how energy flows through bodies, spaces and materials and at the same time opens up for a reflection on our relationship to technology, nature and society.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martha Skou is a Danish artist who has lived in several places in the world but is now based in Copenhagen. She works interdisciplinary at the intersection of sculpture, sound, performance and textiles. Her practice unites analytical and experimental methods in an investigation of how energy, materiality and sensation interact. Focusing on the inherent dynamics, movement and resonance of materials, she creates abstract, atmospheric universes in both spatial installations and two-dimensional formats.
Martha Skou holds a Master’s degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Design and a background in music. Music plays a central role in her work, where sound performances, graphic scores and visual objects function as a form of visual music.
She has participated in international residencies and exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York, Maison du Danemark in Paris, Telfair Museums in Savannah, ARoS in Aarhus and Pioneer Works in New York.
INSPIRATION AND THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
The project draws on the American philosopher Jane Bennett’s theory of the vitality of materials. According to Bennetts, matter is not just passive, but active – a visible and invisible force that drives our understanding of the world and our relationship to it. Skou integrates this philosophy into her work, where she sees art as a means of making visible the forces that connect us to our physical and technological environments. Wave Medium enables the viewer to understand and feel these forces in a bodily and sensory way.
